Vibration Analysis

TRI Transmission & Bearing Corpo

TRI Transmission & Bearing Corporation was founded on the knowledge and ability to diagnose, simulate, and predict the rotor vibratory characteristics of most types of rotating machinery.  TRI’s  thorough understanding of the symptoms and fundamental causes of a wide range of vibration problems has led to our development of applicable solutions for these problems.  Solving rotor vibration and bearing damage issues of Large Steam Turbine-Generators and of Large, High Power Fluid Drives for BFP service is a TRI specialty.

TRI Transmission & Bearing Corporation continues to expand  its capabilities to improve the services provided to our customers who experience vibration problems with their rotating machinery.  Vibration analysis capabilities at TRI have recently been upgraded to allow for better vibration data acquisition and reporting functionality.   TRI Transmission & Bearing Corporation has added highly qualified personnel  to perform on-site vibration analysis and machinery diagnostic activities.  The additional personnel allows for fast response to customers’ issues.

TRI technical personnel are able to attach TRI’s data acquisition, diagnostic, and recording equipment to customers’ in-place data acquisition and sensor systems.  Alternately, TRI personnel can set up complete test instrument systems using vibration, pressure, temperature, stress, and related sensors, as well as extensive data acquisition, diagnostic, and recording equipment.

Based on the vibration diagnostic results, TRI technical personnel provide reports that include recommendations for resolving vibration, bearing damage, and structural issues that are identified in the diagnostic analysis.  In many cases, TRI offers to design, manufacture, and to supply upgraded rotating components, bearings, and/or structural upgrades that, when installed, will resolve the particular issue(s) at hand.

Gap Voltage 0±25 Vdc

Process Variable 1-5 Vdc/0-10 Vdc

2x Keyphasor inputs 100-60k rpm

Velocity Seismoprobes

Velocity Seismoprobe Transducers are externally mounted on machinery to measure casing vibration.  Interfaces directly to data acquisition units.

Bently NevadaÒ

4.5-10k Hz. Frequency Range

20 mV/in/s Sensitivity

1 in/s @ 100 Hz

1000 ft. max Lead Wire

Proximity Probes

Proximity transducers are mounted to view the relative displacement of the shaft.  These transducers can be permanently mounted or temporarily mounted depending on access to the element.  The proximity transducers are sensitive to the material of the component being measured.  In addition, proximity transducers are able to measure static gap voltage, which can give an indication of position.

Bently NevadaÒ

80 mils linear range

Optical Keyphasor

The optical keyphasor transducer uses a reflective surface to create a voltage spike.  The optical keyphasor is used to provide a temporary speed and phase reference for balancing and diagnostics.

Bently NevadaÒ

1 ms Rise Time

15 ms Fall Time

Spectrum Analyzer

The Spectrascope – Real Time Analyzer accepts a single input for spectrum analysis and dual input for sweep functionality.  Allows for real time spectrum analysis and also orbit plots.

1x (2) Channel Oscilloscope and 1x (4) Channel Oscilloscope, the (4) Channel Oscilloscope is a Tektronics and allows for orbits with blanking for keyphasor.

Infrared Thermometer

IR Thermometer for non-contacting temperature measurements.

Vibration Analysis

The goal of TRI Transmission & Bearing Corporations vibration analysis is to determine root cause problems with rotating machinery, then determine/design a solution to allow the equipment to return to normal operation.  The following list briefly summarizes some of the techniques and formats used to perform the analysis:

  • Waveform Analysis

  • Spectrum Analysis

  • Steady-State Analysis

  • Transient Analysis (Start Up/Shut Down)

  • Rotor-dynamic Modeling and Analysis

  • Stability (sensitivity to Non-synchronous Vibration) Analysis

Monitoring Systems for Vibration, Pressure, Temperature and Related Data

TRI Transmission & Bearing Corporation technical personnel have been designing, installing, and using complete monitoring systems for vibration, pressure, temperature, stress, and other related variables since the 1970s. In many cases, TRI designed and manufactured specialized sensors to obtain the data required for proper decision making on the part of the owner’s representatives.

These systems have been installed on a variety of many types of rotating machines, including gas compressors, gearboxes, large steam turbine-generators, gas turbines, ship propulsion systems, thrust bearings, hydro-turbines, and the like.

Accordingly, TRI technical personnel offer Consulting Services for Designing, Implementing, and Using Vibration Sensor and Monitoring Systems. In particular, TRI has experience with Bently Nevada equipment beginning in 1972, and today, includes:

  • 7200 Monitoring System – Bently Nevada;

  • 3300 Monitoring System – Bently Nevada;

  • 3500 Monitoring System – Bently Nevada;

  • Data Manager 2000 ® – Bently Nevada

  • System 1 ®  – Bently Nevada

  • ADRE ®  – Bently Nevada

  • Proximity Probes – Bently Nevada,

  • Specialized Mounting Arrangements for Probes;

  • Proximitors and Cables – Bently Nevada;

  • Seismoprobes – Bently Nevada

  • Velomitors ® – Bently Nevada

  • DVF II (  Digital vector Filter II ) – Bently Nevada

  • Consulting Services

  • System Design and Problem Evaluation

Balancing

In-situ Balancing:
TRI Transmission & Bearing Corporation has the experience and ability to balance rotating machinery in-situ from Large Steam Turbine Generators at 3600 RPM with up to 12 Bearings in a Tandem configuration to pumps and fans.  A sample list of equipment TRI has balanced in the past is as follows:

  • Large Steam Turbine Generators up to 12 Bearings

  • Generators 20 MW – 800 MW

  • FD and ID Fans

  • Boiler Feed Pumps

  • Axial Compressors

  • Axial Fans

  • Gears

Factory Balancing

TRI Transmission & Bearing Corporation has a balance machine in its facility in Lionville, PA where low speed balancing can be done.

  • Rotating elements up to 14 ft. long and 17,500 lbs.

  • Schenck-Trebel balancing machine.

  • Data processing computer Very recently manufactured.

  • “Hard roller” design.

  • Rollers are precision ground to provide minimum runout.

  • Drive mechanism is end mounted.

  • Special roller assemblies can be made, if required by the job.

  • Typical example: Balance 2000 lb rotating assemblies at 600 rpm to less than 50 gm-inches each end.

  • TRI balances Fluid Drive and other rotating elements using “wet balance” process.

Complete Solutions

TRI Transmission & Bearing Corporation designs and manufactures equipment to solve machinery problems.  TRI technical personnel are intimately familiar with the products and the fundamental principles behind the product application.  The combination of rotor-dynamic knowledge and manufacturing gives TRI Transmission & Bearing Corporation the ability to    identify new solutions to problems, to adapt our many proven designs, including patented features, to new variants of existing solutions, and to   manufacture and to implement the solutions.

The customer, therefore, receives a complete solution package from a single source from identification of the cause or causes of a problem through implementation, and return to service.  The drawings and specifications for each project are created and retained in TRI’s computer data system, and these are backed up daily. Summary reports or detailed reports, at the customers’ option, can be produced.

TRI’s approach gives the customer full disclosure and open communication on the problem as well as the solution options, thereby allowing for more informed decisions on the part of the customer and a better solution provided by TRI.
